What is the best time of year for a photographic tour to Kenya?Kenya has two main seasons, wet and dry. The dry season, June to October, generally has less vegetation, and animals tend to congregate around watering holes, making sightings more abundant. The sky is also clearer, providing good light and stunning sunsets. The wet season, November to May, can be equally appealing. A lot of the wildlife gives birth during these months, giving you a better chance at photographing baby animals. It also has a lot of migratory birds at this time of year, making it particularly appealing to bird enthusiasts. The moody sky and wet ground also gives you the chance to get creative and make some dramatic photos. It really comes down to what you want from your tour, but both seasons offer an equally unique experience.
-
Will we be focusing mostly on birds or animals?Kenya offers something for everyone, and with an abundance of both birds and animals, the choice is really yours. If your preference is animals and you happen to be on tour with someone who’s preference is birds, then we will aim to have the morning session focused on one, with the afternoon session focusing on the other, so everyone gets to experience a bit of what they want. Of course the wildlife doesn’t always conform to the times we want to see them at, so a degree of flexibility is always needed!
-
What vehicle will we be using? Our local guide uses a custom built Toyota Landcruiser. This is the vehicle of choice in Kenya due to its reliably, off road ability and ruggedness. The vehicle has a pop up roof allowing unobstructed 360 degree views from an elevated position for all guests. This is complemented by our expert guide, who is experienced in positioning the vehicle to give you the best angle and view.
-
Who will be with us on the tour? The tour will be limited to 3 guests, with some dates reserved to two guests. In addition, you will be accompanied by a photography guide and the driver/wildlife guide, who will be able to provide information about the wildlife, environment, ecology and history. With 10 years safari experience under his belt our wildlife guide is a fountain of knowledge.
-
What is the accommodation like? For our Nairobi National Park trips, we use local Nairobi hotels, on a half board basis where available. All rooms are single occupancy in a double room, so you won’t be sharing with a stranger.
-
Are airport transfers included?Yes. Usually our guide for the week will also handle airport pickup/drop off. If this is not possible local transfers will be arranged with the hotel, and this is all included in the price of your booking.
-
Will there be water in the vehicle?Yes. The vehicle is fitted with a cool box and will be stocked with bottles of drinking water for you each day.
-
Are there toilet facilities in the park? The park has several picnic areas, and most of them have toilet facilities available. There may be times during low season where some are closed for maintenance however, so it is advised to try and use the toilets as and when available to avoid getting caught short! The toilet block at the main gate is always available and has proper hand washing facilities, and we will always call in there before and after the drive.
-
How long do the daily game drives last?We aim to be in the park by 08:00 and leave by around 17:30. However the day could be a little longer or shorter depending on wildlife sightings, weather conditions and traffic to/from the park.
